Care Home Cycling Challenge Raises Funds For Dementia Fight

86-YEAR-OLD Elsie Bunyard cycled almost three miles in just 15 minutes as part of a fundraising event at her Skelmanthorpe care home.

The Longroyds and Pilling House Care Home resident was one of many who took to static bikes to clock up miles during the event.

The charity cycling challenge saw elderly residents, staff, friends and family take to the saddle in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.

In total, they covered almost 125-miles and raised nearly £200 over the eight-hour event, with more donations still coming in.

Elsie said: “I wanted to take part in memory of my husband, who had Alzheimer’s disease.”

Fellow resident Margaret Noble also took part, alongside her son Jeremy and grandson Luke, who powered through their 15 minute stints, adding many more miles to the total.

Iain Lodge, activities coordinator for Longroyds and Pilling House Care Home, on Pilling Lane, ensured the pedals never stopped turning.

He said: “The event was a huge success and everyone had a great time, including our residents, who really enjoyed using the static bikes.

“We were all really impressed with their enthusiasm, not to mention their fitness levels!

“We’d like to thank everyone for taking part, especially the residents and their families, who did an amazing job helping us to surpass our targets for the day.”

The event was in support of Wendy Waddicor, managing director of the Hill Care Group, which operates the care home.

Wendy is aiming to cycle 300-miles from London to Paris in July to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Hill Care’s homes across the north of England have all been setting their own cycling challenges in support.

She said: “It was great to see the residents, staff and visitors all taking part. I’m really grateful for the support.

“The funds will go towards the Alzheimer’s Society, which is a charity close to the hearts of everyone at Hill Care, as many of our homes offer specialist dementia care.”

Wendy and the Hill Care Group have raised more than £4,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society so far.
