Alzheimer’s Society Shortlisted For A Charity Award 2015

Alzheimer’s Society has been shortlisted for a prestigious Charity Award for our innovative Dementia Research Leaders programme.

By attracting the brightest minds to work on dementia, the Dementia Research Leaders programme is giving a much needed boost to the UK dementia research community. The Charity Awards recognise excellence within the charity sector across ten categories and winners will be announced on 18 June.

850,000 people in the UK are living with dementia. Despite the fact that the condition costs the economy more than £26 billion, double that of cancer, dementia research sees less than one-sixth the investment and one-sixth the number of researchers compared with cancer.Since the programme launched in January 2014, Alzheimer’s Society has invested £5.3m in capacity-building research, including the establishment of eight new Doctoral Training Centres that will support 53 new PhDs to train in dementia research.

Tania Mason, group editor at Civil Society Media which organises The Charity Awards, congratulated Alzheimer’s Society on making the highly-coveted shortlist:

‘We had an almost record number of entries this year – just four fewer than our all-time high in 2011 – and the standard was excellent, so Alzheimer’s Society should be very proud to have made the shortlist,’

‘For 16 years The Charity Awards have been identifying and celebrating the fantastic work that UK charities do, and the rigorous judging process ensures that only the very best-run charities make it through. We wish Alzheimer’s Society all the very best of luck on the night.’

Dr Doug Brown, Director of Research and Development at Alzheimer’s Society, said:

‘We’re delighted that our Dementia Research Leaders programme has been shortlisted to receive a prestigious Charity Award. Supporting talented individuals to develop a career in dementia research is a core priority for Alzheimer’s Society, bringing us a step closer to achieving our vision of a world without dementia.’
