(L-R) Concord College students Augustine Lam, Carine Chan Yuen Ting, Social Life Coordinator Debbie Rees from Isle Court Nursing Home, Resident Barbra, students Jessica Chen and Sean Soh.
Students have swapped the classroom to learn about compassion and engaging with older people thanks to a partnership with leading provider, Morris Care.

A dozen teenagers from Concord College in Acton Burnell are enjoying work experience with a difference at four Shropshire nursing homes. During their weekly visits they spend an afternoon getting to know residents by joining in with activities such as arts and crafts, music and cookery sessions.

Morris Care’s Sue Austin, Chief Operating Officer, said: “The students are all hoping to pursue careers in the medical care sector. This is an ideal opportunity to learn about care in a practical way and demonstrate their empathy. Our residents benefit too as they enjoy the interaction and energy from young people.

“Our regular social activities are a great way of engaging residents, getting them involved and bringing back happy memories.”

The students from Concord, an independent international school, are assigned to one of four nursing homes – Isle Court and Radbrook in Shrewsbury, Oldbury Grange, Bridgnorth, and Stretton Hall, All Stretton. They are given guidance by home staff and accompanied throughout the visits.

Morris Care has developed links in the community with schools to encourage visits. This is the first time it has provided work experience in this sustained way.

It has been delivering outstanding care for nearly 30 years and operates six homes in Shropshire and Cheshire.
