Spelthorne Police Cadets Bring Intergenerational Connection to The Burlington Care Home

A residential care home in Spelthorne has demonstrated the value of intergenerational engagement after hosting a group of local police cadets for an evening of shared stories, games and meaningful conversation.

The Burlington recently welcomed Spelthorne Police Cadets as part of a community engagement initiative arranged by Police Constable Caroline Barnes, the force’s Youth Engagement Officer, who approached the home to explore opportunities for cadets to connect with residents.

The visit aligned closely with The Burlington’s Life Enrichment Programme, which emphasises community connection and relationship-building. Both the cadets and residents were able to share experiences, develop new skills and engage in creative activities designed to foster understanding across generations.

Upon arrival, the cadets assisted staff with serving dinner and refreshments before gathering in the home’s piano bar, where the evening’s activities unfolded. Residents and young people spent time in conversation, sharing life stories and enjoying board games together.

One particularly poignant moment emerged through the connection between the cadets and resident Gerry, who served as both a police cadet and later a police constable during his career. The exchange of stories and experiences between Gerry and the current cadets created a tangible sense of shared understanding and continuity.

Margielyn Gonzaga, Home Manager at The Burlington, reflected on the success of the visit:
“It was such a joy to see our residents and the cadets connecting so naturally. Moments like Gerry sharing his own policing memories were incredibly special and remind us just how valuable these intergenerational visits are. We’re so proud to be part of a community that brings people together in such a meaningful way.”

PC Barnes added: “All the cadets enjoyed the evening, and it was lovely to see them engaging so well with the residents and lovely to see the residents enjoying playing the games with the cadets too. We look forward to arranging another visit to The Burlington soon.”
