Somerset Care Residents Can Cycle all Over the World

Residents at Stockmoor Lodge in Bridgwater have been invited to take part in an exciting three month project with Norwegian company, Motitech.

Stockmoor Lodge welcomed North Petherton mayor, Alan Bradford, to join the residents and staff as they introduced the Motiview project to their home.

With the equipment set up, residents took no time in getting to grips with the bikes and sharing stories on the familiar routes from their past.

Supported by Sport England’s Active Ageing Fund, the Motiview project consists of an adapted exercise bike, combined with a video library of worldwide and familiar routes.

Thanks to the technology, residents can cycle around their old home towns, transport themselves to a popular holiday destination or explore somewhere completely new, all whilst getting exercise and improving their wellbeing.

The project was first introduced to older people in Bergen, Norway and has documented benefits in improved mobility, increased appetite, better sleep patterns, improved wellbeing and social interaction.

Since its launch, the project has been rolled out to more than 300 different care homes, day care centres and hospitals across the world.

Speaking on the project, Frazer Bell, manager, said: “We are really excited to be involved in this new, innovative technology that has so much potential to enrich our residents’ lives.

“Both staff and residents are keen to trial the bikes and I know we will really embrace this new project. I look forward to the fun conversations that this will generate within our home.”
