Sanders Senior Living Opens Inspiring Resident Art Exhibition
Residents from across the Sanders Senior Living and Runwood Homes groups celebrated the official opening of the inspiring No Art Without Heart exhibition, returning for the third year, with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony at The People’s Gallery in Southend.
The exhibition, which is open to the public until 28th August, showcases an extraordinary collection of artwork created by residents from care homes across Essex and the wider UK. Celebrating creativity, individuality and the power of meaningful engagement, the exhibition demonstrates that artistic expression has no age limit.
Residents travelled to the gallery to see their artwork professionally displayed, with two residents taking part in the official ribbon cutting to mark the exhibition’s opening. The event featured speeches from Kieun Kwon, Associate Director of Wellbeing and Dementia Services, Sarah Sanders, Business Development Director, Hilary Woodhead, Executive Director at NAPA, and Jude Sweeting from Dementia Community.
The exhibition has provided residents with far more than an opportunity to create artwork. Having a shared goal to work towards has given participants a renewed sense of purpose, achievement and pride, while the creative process has encouraged conversation, reminiscence and connection within each home.
This year’s collection includes an eclectic range of artistic styles and mediums, with many pieces reflecting collaborative projects between residents, families and local communities. Some artworks were created by families spanning four generations, while others were produced alongside local schoolchildren through intergenerational initiatives. Other pieces emerged during lively group sessions, with some inspired by quieter moments of personal reflection.
Every participating home reported that the project sparked laughter, storytelling and meaningful conversations, reinforcing the important role creativity plays in supporting wellbeing and maintaining a strong sense of identity.
Residents were visibly moved as they explored the gallery, proudly pointing out their own creations to friends, family and fellow artists. Seeing their work displayed in a public gallery was a special moment and a fitting celebration of the talent, passion and individuality found throughout both care groups.
Speaking at the opening, Sarah Sanders said: “This art exhibition is a true celebration of humanity, connection, and pure, unfiltered expression, all driven by an inclusive, person-led ethos.
“Under the theme No Art Without Heart, it normalises creative freedom and showcases the vibrant, can-do spirit of every participant. It breaks past traditional boundaries, proving that life, stories and art continue dynamically far beyond the conventional concept of a care home.”
Hilary Woodhead, Executive Director at NAPA, highlighted the organisations’ shared commitment to championing creativity and meaningful engagement within care settings. She described the homes as “the gold standard”, adding, “This is an example of best practice.”
