Runcorn Grandad Walks 100 Miles For Community Integrated Care
John Timms, a 75-year old great grandad has embarked on a 100-mile marathon in memory of his late wife Marian, raising funds for St Luke’s Care Home in Runcorn and Halton Radio in the process!
John was joined by his son Dave, 50, and friend Derek Gates, 64, as he walked for six days along five canals from Birmingham to Runcorn. The trio returned to their home town on Saturday afternoon, a day before the first anniversary of Marian’s passing. So far, they have raised over £3,200 for their two chosen causes.
St Luke’s Care Home, where Marian was a resident in the months before her passing, is a specialist dementia care service and part of national health and social care charity Community Integrated Care. John has remained a firm supporter of St Luke’s and Community Integrated Care, and visits the staff and residents every week.
St Luke’s is regarded nationally as a centre of excellence in dementia care, and supports people with the most advanced and complex dementia needs in Halton.
Last year, the home enjoyed an incredible refurbishment, which transformed a formerly tired care home into a welcoming, stimulating and dementia-friendly environment. This has included the opening of a cinema, pub, seaside-themed room, indoor gardens and 1950’s kitchen – creating tranquil, stimulating and interesting places throughout the home.
By working creatively with partners, St Luke’s has been able to develop new ways for residents to lead active lives – accessing reminiscence sessions hosted by Widnes Vikings Rugby Club, and participating in a literature project with The Reader Organisation which saw volunteers reading classic poetry and stories to residents.
Retired chef John wanted to take part in this challenge to thank St Luke’s for all they did while Marian was a resident.
He says: “They were absolutely brilliant at St Luke’s. I can’t speak highly enough of them. They not only cared for Marian but looked after me and all our family. Even after she died, they invited me back and I just love the people there. I can’t fault St Luke’s one bit. I’m glad we can give a little something back.”
