Rotherham Veteran Celebrates 104th Birthday
Meg Sewell has reached the extraordinary milestone surrounded by family, friends, and carers from Moorgate Croft.
Meg, who moved into the Rotherham care home in October 2025, has lived a life enriched with service and personal accomplishment.
Born in Greasborough, she went on to become a respected journalist, writing the women’s page for the Rotherham Advertiser for many years. Her warm and insightful writing made her a familiar face across the community, often invited to open events and judge competitions, earning her the reputation of a “mini celebrity.”
During World War II, Meg served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), rising to the rank of Sergeant and spending four years based in Nottingham. She also took on wartime postal duties, contributing to the vital communication efforts that kept families connected.
Her dedication to community continued long after the war. In 2015, Meg was awarded an MBE by the late Queen Elizabeth II for her outstanding services to the Women’s Institute and multiple charities.
Family has always been at the heart of Meg’s world. She was married to her husband Harold, who sadly passed away 30 years ago. She is a proud mother to her daughter Pam, a grandmother to one granddaughter and two grandsons, and a great‑grandmother to six great‑grandchildren.
With interests including gardening, crosswords, reading, and flower arranging, Meg remains active and engaged.
When asked for the secret to her long and fulfilling life, she offered simple but timeless wisdom: “Moderation in everything and being happy.”
Lauren Davies, Home Manager at Moorgate Croft, said: “We are delighted to have been able to help Meg to celebrate reaching this amazing milestone.
“Meg is a real character, and part of the family here at Moorgate Croft. The staff and other residents absolutely love her.
“Like everyone here, she’s led a fascinating life, and here at Moorgate Croft, we take the time to reminisce while supporting our residents to make new memories.”
