Residents and Staff Shine at Talent Show

The Freedom Centre in Hull was the venue for a spectacular talent show recently organised by social care provider HICA Group, bringing together residents and staff from care homes and services across Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

The event, which attracted a full house of local community members, friends, relatives and HICA employees, was a resounding success. Attendees were treated to a celebration of talent and creativity with 14 unique performances.

The afternoon began with HullDance, which works closely with HICA, presenting a video demonstrating movement to music. Residents from three care homes participated, dancing and interacting along with the presentation.

Following the opening act, The Hollies took to the stage with a performance of Bella Ciao, combining the efforts of residents and staff. The energy continued as Isaac Robinson Court embraced a summer theme, complete with props, to perform a medley of Summer Holiday and Summer Lovin’. The audience was then entertained by a solo performance of Angels by Colin, a staff member from Elm Tree Court, who received a rapturous response for his moving rendition.

Terry Peel, CEO of HICA Group, said: “It was a pleasure to see everyone’s hard work come to life. Many residents were performing for the first time, and their confidence and enthusiasm were inspiring. Events like these are more than just entertainment – -they boost residents’ wellbeing and foster a real sense of community.”

Later, The Hollies returned with a lively interpretation of La Bamba, followed by Cranwell Court, which entertained with a nostalgic dance routine to Swing the Mood by Jive Bunny. The Wolds Care Centre performed a seated dance set to Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka, while Wilton Lodge provided a country-style performance of Country Roads (Remix) by The Lucky Boys.

As the afternoon progressed, Isaac Robinson Court returned with a standout zombie-themed routine inspired by Thriller. Adding to the mix of talents, Patrick, a staff member from The Hollies, performed a cappella version of You’re Still the One by Shania Twain, leaving the audience mesmerised. The event concluded on a high note with The Shiners, who organised the talent show, delivering a high-energy finale with their rendition of YMCA.

Alywn, a resident from The Hollies, shared her experience: “Performing for our families and friends was such a lovely experience and it was nice that everyone took part. We worked hard in rehearsals, and I’m really proud of what we accomplished.”
