Newfield Lodge Residents Share The Secret To A Long And Happy Marriage

Eric and Beryl Wilford were excited to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary last week, and they shared the secret to their long and happy marriage.  Eric and Beryl have lived at Newfield Lodge care home in Castleford since April this year and staff arranged for a party in their honour.

Eric and Beryl got married in 1951 in Melton Mowbray where they had lived all their lives.  Eric worked on a farm and Beryl worked in the local chemist and they had three children, Simon, Philip and Lesley.  They moved to Castleford earlier this year to be nearer their children and three grandchildren, who are regular visitors to Newfield Lodge.

The traditional gift for 65th wedding anniversary is the blue sapphire, which is symbolic of trust and loyalty, and Eric surprised Beryl with a beautiful new wedding ring in front of family and friends at their party. Beryl was stunned at the heartfelt gesture and decided to share the secret of their 65 years wed.  She said, “We haven’t done anything special to be honest – we have just been happy and we have a lovely family.  I would say it is best to not fall out and argue though!”

Newfield Lodge staff and residents decorated the home and prepared a buffet and cake for everyone to celebrate.  Paula Mountjoy, Home Manager of Newfield Lodge, said “We were all so excited to celebrate such a wonderful occasion with Eric and Beryl and their family.  They are a wonderful couple and still very much in love.  It is a pleasure for us to have them live here.”

Newfield Lodge, which is operated by Ideal Carehomes and has 64 en-suite bedrooms, is a high quality residential and dementia care home which provides a great place to live, making a real difference to the lives of the people who live there.
