Manchester TV Star Brings Comedy to Care Home

Smug Roberts - Visits EachStep, Blackley as part of 20 gigs in 2One of Manchester’s biggest stars of Comedy and TV brought comedy to a care home this weekend, as part of an epic stand-up comedy marathon to raise money for Comic Relief.

Smug Roberts, renowned for his roles in Mrs Brown’s Boys and Phoenix Nights took to the stage at EachStep Blackley on Saturday evening – as he took on the incredible task of performing 20 gigs in 20 hours to celebrate 20 years in the industry, and raise £2,000 for Comic Relief along the way!

This was a poignant reunion for Smug, real name Andy Wilkinson, whose mother was a resident at the award-winning specialist dementia service for several years until her recent passing. A packed out house of staff, residents and families turned out in full voice and ready for lots of laughed – which Smug duly delivered.

Smug has remained a passionate supporter of the care home to this day, choosing to perform there as a token of his thanks for the care his mother received.  EachStep Blackley is part of national social care charity Community Integrated Care.

Michelle Phillips, Home Manager at EachStep Blackley, says: “Andy has always been so supportive of our work at EachStep, and we were delighted that he thought of us as part of his roadshow.”

“At EachStep, we’re always looking for new ways to welcome the community to our service and find interesting and novel activities for the people we support – they all had a brilliant time with lots of laughs, and will be talking about this very special night for a very long time!”

On announcing his gig at the service, Smug said: “I chose EachStep as a way of thanking the wonderful staff for the top class care and quality of life they gave my Mum.”

“Mum had a fantastic sense of humour as do all the folk at EachStep, and after every visit I came away smiling and reassured that she was in the best place possible.”
