Magpies Legends Celebrated in Mural at Newcastle Care Home

Residents and staff at Ashton Court care home in Newcastle are enjoying a striking new mural celebrating some of Newcastle United’s greatest ever figures, created by local artist Reuben Healer.

The mural, which has been painted on the second floor of the home, features a number of iconic Newcastle United legends including Sir Bobby Robson, Alan Shearer, Kevin Keegan and Malcolm Macdonald.

The artwork has quickly become a talking point within the home, with many residents and team members being lifelong Newcastle United supporters.

Ashton Court commissioned the mural, together with one of Newcastle landmarks on the first floor, as part of ongoing efforts to create engaging and personalised spaces throughout the home that reflect the interests and passions of residents.  The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor Henry Gallagher, visited the care home to admire and unveil the murals.

Val McLoughlin, home manager at Ashton Court, said: “The mural looks fantastic and has brought a real sense of pride and excitement to the home. Many of our residents are huge Newcastle United supporters and they immediately recognised the players and memories connected to them.

“It has sparked so many conversations between residents, relatives and staff, with people sharing stories about matches they attended and their favourite Newcastle moments. Reuben has done an amazing job as he has with a famous Newcastle landmarks mural on the first floor. Both are stunning and real talking points”

Steve Massey, operations manager for Solehawk, added: “Creating environments that feel personal and meaningful for residents is incredibly important. The murals have transformed the spaces and reflect the strong connection many people in Newcastle have with the football club, the city and its history.

The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor Henry Gallagher said: “It has been wonderful to see how much enjoyment it has brought to everyone at Ashton Court.”

“It was a huge pleasure for me to formally cut the ribbon on these two fantastic murals. The first showing the ups and downs of Newcastle United over the years. As a season ticket holder it struck a chord with me.
