Lillian Celebrates Her Century

Lillian HunterStaff and residents at a Gateshead care home have come together to celebrate the 100thbirthday of one of its longest serving residents.

Lillian Hunter, who marked the milestone at Alexandra House, which is operated by Akari Care, was joined by her family, including sons Gordon, who made the trip from San Francisco, and Billy, as well as her four grandchildren.

Originally from Jarrow, Lillian has been a resident at Alexandra House since 1999.

Lillian, who was married to George and also has five great grandchildren, was at school during WW2 and in her younger days enjoyed travelling abroad, as well as listening to classical music, baking and knitting and, especially, dancing.

The home, on Havelock Terrace, in the town, hosted a special party for Lillian, which included live entertainment and the presentation of a personalised message from the Queen, in honour of the occasion.

Marie Bainbridge, home manager at Alexandra House, said: “It was a lovely celebration to mark Lillian’s 100th birthday and she really enjoyed being surrounded by her family and friends. Lillian is one of our longest standing residents and is a well-liked character at the home. She has enjoyed a remarkable life, so far, and the party was a fitting celebration for a special lady.

“I would like to thank everyone who attended, especially to Lillian’s family who made the long trip from overseas, as it made the day all the more special.”
