Joe Wicks Surprises Care Home Resident on Her 100th Birthday

A very special birthday celebration took place at Care UK’s Tennyson Grange care home, on Westmead Road, when resident Marjorie Agass, received a surprise visit from her favourite TV presenter, Joe Wicks for her 100th birthday.

After seeing residents take part in one of his exercise classes online, Joe’s Senior Workouts, from his YouTube channel, for Care UK’s Let Get Physical initiative, Joe wanted to say thank you and meet his fitness fans in person to treat them to a mini live workout.

On the day, Joe wished Marjorie a happy birthday and spoke to the residents about the benefits of exercising as we age. Keen to mark the special occasion, the home decorated the lounge with balloons and banners, and the home’s talented head chef baked birthday cupcakes for everyone to enjoy – including Joe!

Marjorie was born on 31st March 1922 in Nottingham. Working during WW2 as a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, Marjorie met her husband, Ernest. The couple married in 1947 and later moved to London where they had three children, Susan, Valerie and Stephen. Keen to see the world, Marjorie and Ernest took their family on many holidays, and also lived in Canada for a few years, where the family travelled across the country in an old Ford car, staying in different motels and campsites. The couple also flew on Concorde, and over New York and Niagara Falls in a helicopter.

Commenting on the day, Marjorie’s children said: “Mum has been talking about have a knees up on her 100th birthday since she turned 89. She belonged to a gym until she was 90 and believed in having a healthy lifestyle which also included having a nip of brandy every day! She is delighted to have finally reached this milestone”.

Jogie Dellota, General Manager at Tennyson Grange, said:
“We were delighted to welcome Joe to Tennyson Grange! The residents loved getting involved in Joe’s online PE class for our Let’s Get Physical initiative, so it was great for the residents to meet him in person and to help celebrate Marjorie’s 100th birthday!

“It was fantastic to see Marjorie enjoying this incredible milestone with her family and friends. It was lovely to hear Marjorie share some very inspiring memories – including a helicopter ride across New York. The day was filled with music, cake and lots of laughter – the perfect way to celebrate being 100 years young.

“On behalf of everyone at Tennyson Grange, we want to say a big thank you to Joe for making Marjorie’s day extra special – he is welcome back anytime!”
