International Friendship Day: Older People Connect Across The World

Image 1 - Residents at Abbeyfield's Pelican Park developmentEvery year on the first Sunday of August, people from around the world come together to celebrate International Friendship Day.

The Abbeyfield Society, the charity that strives to improve the quality of life for older people, understands the value of friendship and encourages staff and residents to make time for friends across the world.

Next week, Abbeyfield Clifton House on the Isle of Wight will be hosting an International Coffee Morning to raise funds for safe, warm and comfortable housing at Abbeyfield’s South African home, Pelican Park.

Pelican Park will serve Cape Town’s older community, many of whom live in townships which lack basic facilities such as running water, electricity or toilets.

Senior House Manager, Lois Rogers, said: “When my residents and I learnt about the poverty faced by South Africa’s older people, and the plans Abbeyfield have to help, it felt natural for us to hold an event.

“I will be providing a South African themed spread for those who want to try something a little different to coffee and cake, and we’re excited to welcome in anybody who wants to help raise funds for this special cause.”
