Holi Celebrations Bring Colour And Culture To Sevenoaks Care Home
Bright colours and big smiles brought the Badgers Mount community together for a very special Holi festival celebration at a local care home.
Residents at Nesbit House Care Home welcomed members of the local community into their home to host the religious festival, transforming the main garden courtyard into a vibrant sea of colour inspired by the traditional Hindu “Festival of Colours”.
Nesbit House Homemaker Shelly Kataria, who is a Hindu, said: “Our Holi celebration at the care home was a truly memorable and heartwarming experience.
“Celebrating with the residents allowed us to feel fully included and connected, and their openness and respect for our culture were genuinely overwhelming.
“The joy, colours and shared moments created an atmosphere of togetherness that we will cherish for a long time.”
The event celebrated the arrival of spring and symbolised renewal, hope and the triumph of good over evil – central themes of Holi observed by millions of Hindus around the world.
As part of the celebration, coloured powders created a spectacular scene, symbolising unity and equality, while music and traditional treats added to the festive atmosphere.
Nesbit House resident Josephine Penfold, aged 87, said: “The event was a lovely opportunity to learn more about the tradition and why this means so much across the world. It was beautiful to see everyone smiling and sharing in it equally.”
Shelly, who has worked at Nesbit House since 2022, added: “Being able to honour our cultural traditions alongside the team and residents reminds us of the importance of community, understanding, and inclusion.
“It’s these moments that strengthen bonds and make our care homes feel even more like a family.”
Nesbit House Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Iestyn Gadd helped plan the event alongside his colleague Shelly. He said: “This was our first big cultural event and our first. time doing Holi, Given the huge success of the Holi event, we will be looking to explore and do more cultural events.
“Thank you to our amazing community for supporting this amazing event.”
