Hicare Celebrates Dementia Awareness Week

Spencefield Grange staff and residentsHicare homes, Spencefield Grange and Meadow’s Court, Leicester both held educational and fun Dementia Awareness events this year to raise public awareness of dementia in the community. Dementia Awareness Week is a national initiative and ran from Sunday 17th May – Saturday 23rd May this year.

Spencefield Grange held a 1940’s themed day on Tuesday 19th May whilst Meadow’s Court held an ‘Old School’ themed day on Thursday 21st May.

Both homes put on a variety of activities for visitors, residents and staff about to educate them about dementia and the difficulties that can be experienced whilst living with the condition.

• Our Dementia Champion, Manisha Zala, held Dementia Cafes at both the homes, which was a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in learning about dementia to become a Dementia Friend and pledge to spread the word about dementia themselves. We had a fantastic turnout and many of our visitors became Dementia Friends.

• We held a Dementia Treasure Hunt which had visitors and staff searching for dementia flowers around the home. Once found these were stuck on our home’s “Dementia Tree” so everyone could collectively view the flowers which had words written on about different aspects of dementia. This enabled everyone to get a clear picture of what someone with dementia experiences.

• There was also a variety of memory activities including memory prompt cards, rummage boxes and Sensory Experiences in our innovative Sensory Room, for residents and visitors to get involved in. These gave the residents conversational points that got them reminiscing about past experiences, memories and celebrations.

• Both our homes were honoured to experience musical performances from the community. Spencefield Grange were lucky to receive a performance from singer and pianist duo, Lyn O’Hara and Rebecca Hill. Whilst Meadow’s Court received a performance from local school, Montrose Primary as well as a visit from talented guitarist William Allen who visited the lounges serenading the residents.

The events were a great success and most importantly, everyone gained a better understanding of dementia.
