Given Weeks To Live, Surrey Care Home Resident Rediscovers Life-Changing Art Talent At 93

A Surrey care home resident who entered end-of-life care last autumn has defied all expectations by rediscovering an extraordinary artistic talent, culminating in his debut solo exhibition of 34 original artworks.

Patrick Murphy, 93, a former Banstead local, arrived at Chegworth Nursing Home in Cheam last October under palliative care. Having not drawn or painted in years, Patrick picked up a paintbrush in January as a daily activity. What began as a simple pastime quickly revealed a natural gift, resulting in a collection of 34 unique pieces ranging from detailed sketches to vibrant landscapes created in just seven months.

To celebrate, Chegworth Nursing Home transformed Patrick’s room into a gallery space, hosting a special summer exhibition attended by family, art lovers and local dignitaries, including Deputy Mayor Cryss Mennaceur. Guests gathered to view the exhibition before enjoying traditional afternoon tea in the home’s gardens. Patrick chose to gift his framed original pieces to close friends, family and the dedicated care team at Chegworth as a heartfelt thank you for their support.

Finding his passion again for art has truly given him a new lease on life and in just seven months, his 34 original pieces have brought so much light and colour to our home. We are immensely proud of his achievements and hosting this exhibition was our way of celebrating his incredible talent while bringing the local community together.”

Selected artworks will remain on display in the care home gallery over the coming weeks for visitors and residents to enjoy.
