Gateshead Care Home Celebrates Residents’ 68th Wedding Anniversary
A couple at Alexandra House care home is celebrating being happily married for 68 years with a party at the home.
David and Janet Baird, both 87, met in secondary school when Janet was 12 and David was 11 and their romance blossomed when David walked across the floor at a dancing group they both attended to ask Janet to dance – to this day, the couple still love to dance together when there is entertainment at Alexandra House.
Janet was a ration shop worker throughout the war and later went on to enjoy a career in retail, whereas David was always interested in finance and dabbled in stocks and shares.
The happy couple have three children, Jennifer, Ellis and David, and six grandchildren who they are very close to. Unfortunately, their family were unable to attend the party as they live out of the area, but kept up-to-date with the anniversary celebration via Skype.
Janet and David’s fellow residents and members of staff at Alexandra House joined in with the anniversary celebrations at the care home, which included a performance by a local singer, cake and flowers presented to the Bairds.
Located on Havelock Terrace, Alexandra House is part of Akari Care and provides residential care for 40 elderly residents.
Marie Bainbridge, Manager at Alexandra House, said: “Janet and David are such a lovely couple and everyone at Alexandra House loved sharing and toasting to their special day. The day was a complete success and everyone enjoyed listening to the entertainment with a piece of cake. Congratulations to our very happy couple, we’d all like to wish them a very happy anniversary.”
