Friendly Miniature Horse Brings Smiles to York Care Home Residents

In celebration of International Day of Happiness, residents at RMBI Care Co. Home Connaught Court, in York, were delighted this week when Monet, an American miniature horse came to visit.

Staff from K & L Pony Therapy, led Monet all around the Home so that residents could pet and stroke him. They even stopped off at some residents’ rooms so that Monet could be introduced.

The benefits of spending time with animals for older people are immense. Research has shown that having something to pet or touch can result in lower blood pressure, normal heart rate and reduced stress. Pets provide emotional stability during stressful situations, helping to reduce anxiety and depression.

The visit also proved to be wonderful for residents at Connaught Court who live with dementia as it helped to spark conversation and reminiscence.

Maureen, a resident at Connaught Court commented: “I want to keep him here, he’s so lovely! Monet was calm and docile, and seemed to appreciate all the cuddles.”

Fran Tagg, one of the Home’s Activities Coordinator, said: “Everyone wanted to get up close to this little horse. He is so calm, it is such a surprise to have a farm animal in our lounge. Some of our residents have never been able to touch and feel a live horse before. It has been a great visit!”
