Foundation Stone of New Wiltshire Care Home Laid

Cllr Humphries+Robin KhokharOn 4 September, Cllr Keith Humphries, Wiltshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Adult Care Services, unveiled the Foundation Stone of The Orders of St John Care Trust’s (OSJCT) new, state-of-the-art care centre at Old Sarum.

The ceremony also included OSJCT Trustees and Directors, together with many of those involved in the design and construction of the project.

The new 120-bed care centre will include six households over three floors, providing a total of 72 specialist-nursing beds and 48 dementia beds.

Each bedroom will have en suite shower and toilet facilities, along with access to digital television, telephone and Wi-Fi, as well as a 24-hour nurse call facility.

The home’s wings will be arranged into small units of 16 and 24 bedrooms, each with its own communal dining and lounge areas, along with specialist bathing facilities.

OSJCT’s newest care centre will also include several ‘destination zones’, including a high street themed first floor, complete with a shop, cafe, hair salon and cinema. The rest of the building will be fully furnished throughout and decorated to emulate a home environment, incorporating breakthrough dementia technologies to assist residents.

The outdoor space will offer a fully landscaped garden area with sensory plants, covered areas, gazebos and seating, providing a safe and secure open-air environment for residents to enjoy.

Don Wood, OSJCT’s Chairman, commented: “Once completed, our Old Sarum care centre will be the newest addition to the Trust’s ongoing commitment of creating care schemes and facilities designed to meet the current and future requirements for the care of older people.

“We’re sure this new care centre will be a great asset to the county of Wiltshire, offering specialist care for older people in and around the Old Sarum area.”

Forming part of Wiltshire Council’s Older People Accommodation Development Strategy, the development was approved by the council’s cabinet during April 2013.

The strategy seeks to modernise the way that older people’s accommodation is provided, giving choice and control to individuals and responding to needs in local communities.

Cllr Keith Humphries of Wiltshire Council, said: “Now that the foundation stone for Old Sarum’s newest care facility has been unveiled, we’re excited to watch this development as it progresses over the coming months until it’s completed and older people across Wiltshire can take advantage of the expertise and care services the Orders of St John Care Trust provide.”

The home is being built by Stepnell Ltd in partnership with OSJCT, which will provide the care in the new home.
