Ebor Court Residents Go ‘Back To School’ At Pop-Up Restaurant

Residents at Ebor Court care home in Nether Poppleton, York, took a trip down memory lane and went ‘back to school’ at their latest pop-up restaurant.  Staff dressed up and got into the spirit of the evening whilst residents reminisced about favourite meals from their childhood.

Ebor Court, which is operated by Ideal Carehomes (www.idealcarehomes.co.uk) , understands the importance of nutrition within the care home environment and the pop-up restaurant is another step to ensure that the dining experience at the home is first class.  The theme each month is chosen by residents, and Rowland Wraith, who has lived at Ebor Court since November 2016, was keen to go back to his school days for this month’s theme.

From bangers and lumpy mash to runny custard, not everyone has great memories of the school canteen but the Ebor Court kitchen team put together a menu reminiscent of delicious childhood memories, including leek and potato soup for starters, spam fritters or corned beef hash for main and a true school dinner favourite, apple crumble for pudding.  Residents chatted about the food they used to eat, and Eileen Wood was particularly thrilled with the apple crumble which brought back fond memories of her mother’s cooking.  There was a singer on hand to heighten the atmosphere and after finishing their meal, residents got up for a dance.

Rowland was thrilled with how the evening went and thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing with his friends.  He said, “I remember everything was served with cabbage years ago! The meal tonight has been great, just like we used to have.”  Elaine Robinson, Home Manager at Ebor Court, said “We have a pop-up restaurant each month with a different theme.  It is a wonderful opportunity for our residents to enjoy a full restaurant experience at their own home.  The ‘School Dinners’ theme this month went down a treat – our residents have great memories of the school dining hall and they were keen to recreate this.  We even pushed all the tables together for a traditional canteen experience for them!”
