Bernard-Jordan-D-DayGracewell Healthcare resident the Bernard Jordan celebrates his birthday

The notorious D Day veteran that travelled to Normandy without letting the care home he lives in know where he was going to has today celebrated his 90th birthday.

Bernard Jordan who made the national news decided to join his comrades and celebrate  D Day70 in Normandy. His care home who fully support residents being free to come and go as they please were unaware of his plans.

Arriving safely back at his home he received a heroes welcome. Mr jordan said “I want to thank everyone for their kind words and best wishes following my trip to Normandy – I never imagined my visit would cause such a stir!

“I’m delighted to be back at home with my wife and the wonderful staff here at The Pines. I was never banned from going to the commemorations, I just decided to make my own way there.

Today surrounded by relatives friends and staff he said “I just can’t believe it. It’s quite overwhelming to be honest. I want to thank everyone who sent me a card or a gift. Sadly I can’t thank everyone in person so I hope they get this message. I’m just one man and I’m nothing special. Anyone would think I’d defeated Hitler on my own.

“There were a lot of other people on the beaches of Normandy that day, this lovely attention is for them really, not me.”

In fact he’s received so many cards that space has clearly had to be made for them!

Gracewell Healthcare helped Mr Jordan celebrate in style with The Candy Girls who gave renditions of favorite songs. Mr Jordan had already met the group, on his travels!
