Chesterfield FC Honours 93-Year-Old Former Player On His Birthday
A former Spireites player with over a hundred appearances for the club received a special gift for his 93rd birthday – a Former Players Association legacy badge.
James “Jim” Lovie played 103 games for Chesterfield FC across three seasons from 1961-64, scoring seven goals.
Now the third oldest living player, he received a visit at Springbank House Care Home, Ashgate Road, on his birthday from the club’s community trust heritage officer Peter Whiteley.
Peter presented Jim with the special award, when they discussed his playing days and looked over old photos of him on the pitch.
Jim said: “It’s good to see the old faces again. I enjoyed playing for Chesterfield because I had good team mates and pals.”
Born in Scotland, Jim began his football career as a left winger with Dundee United in the 1950s before moving back to his hometown club Peterhead, where he had begun his youth career.
In 1957, he headed south to join Bury, then moving on to Bournemouth and eventually Chesterfield in 1961.
Emily Barlow, home manager at Springbank House, said:
“I was amazed how many of the names and places Jim remembered from his playing days.
“It was lovely to see pictures of Jim back then and to see him receive the Former Players Association legacy badge. A very proud moment.”
