Care Home Sponsors Local Football Team To Strengthen Intergenerational Links

Following the success of Aberdeen FC’s Scottish Cup win, an Aberdeenshire care home is helping to support the next generation of local football players.

Ellon-based Auchtercrag Care Home, run by Meallmore, one of Scotland’s leading providers of elderly and specialist care, made a donation to Ellon Meadows 2009s to help them buy much-needed kit bags for the season ahead.

The Ellon Meadows 2009s team were invited along to the care home to collect the kit bags and meet some of the residents and colleagues at the home.

Ellon Meadows 2009s play competitive 11 aside football within the ADJFA (Aberdeen & District Juvenile Football Association) B league. The team of 18 local 16-year-olds was formed in 2016 and still have five of the original players involved with the team who have been with the team since the age of seven.

Julie-Anne Thomson, care home manager at Auchtercrag House Care Home said: “It’s really important to us to ensure we keep close ties between our residents and the local community, so we’re very happy to give something back as part of this. Ellon Meadows is one of our local clubs, and we’re keen to further develop intergenerational links, as it brings a lot of joy to our residents, so it seemed like a perfect choice.”

“Lots of our residents are football fans, so we loved meeting the players. We’re looking forward to following the club more closely, and who knows, maybe we’ve got some future Aberdeen FC players on the team!”

Andy Naylor, head coach of Ellon Meadows 2009s said: “I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Meallmore and the staff at Auchtercrag. We’re a volunteer run club and rely on sponsorship to be able to ensure our young players have access to the latest equipment and training. This support has allowed us to purchase high quality kit bags for each player in the team, which will be used for training, and each home and away game in the upcoming 2025/6 season. These are an essential piece of kit allowing the players to stay organised and professional as they represent our club on and off the pitch.

“The lads are all really pleased with their smart new kit bags, and we had a great time coming along to meet the team and residents at Auchtercrag. We’re proud to be associated with Meallmore and look forward to representing the name with respect next season.”
