Burley-in-Wharfedale Care Home Hosts Flower Show For Local Residents

A Wharfedale-based care home gave the local community and residents a chance to show off their gardening skills, when they hosted their very own Flower Show.

Burley Hall Bupa Care Home invited the local community to be a part of the event, held at the home, by welcoming submissions in the form of homegrown vegetables, flowers, and garden arrangements. Local man David Allison was hailed the winner and given the title of ‘best in show’ for his prize-winning home-grown vegetables – in particular an enormous onion which amazed the judging residents.

Residents and staff also had the opportunity to showcase the results of their own green fingers. Marie, 85, Jean, 94, and Joan, 94, (pictured) are all keen gardeners and submitted their own displays of homegrown flowers.

Impressive plants were not the only submission to the flower show, as Burley Nursery School presented a playful garden scene filled with hidden nursey rhymes.

Burley Hall Bupa Care Home resident, Jean Ambler commented: “We had a wonderful day at the Flower Show. The winning plants and vegetables were very impressive, I had never seen veg so big. I’ve always loved spending time in the garden, so I was in my element being able to see, touch, smell and talk all things flowers and allotments.”

Lockdown measures continue at Burley Hall with some visiting restrictions still in place. However, despite the care home being unable to invite people in, they can stay connected to the community through a variety of activities, such as the Flower Show.

Care Home Manager, Julie Robinson, adds: “We’d hoped the Flower Show would bring residents a sense of togetherness with the community and it was a great success. We would like to thank everybody who submitted a display and helped make it a day to remember.

“We like to offer our residents a variety of activities and we’ve found that special events, like the Flower Show, are a fun way to keep spirts high.”
