Brentwood Care Home Leads The Way In Dementia Care With Intelligent Fall Detection Technology

A care home in Kelvedon Common, near Brentwood, has become one of the first in Essex to introduce AI-powered smart lighting to improve care for residents living with dementia.

The initiative, supported by Essex County Council, marks progress in the use of smart technology within care settings. Essex County Council and Dudbrook House partnered with Alcove, one of the industry’s leading technology service providers, to assess the properties and identify opportunities for new smart technologies to improve care for residents. Nobi’s AI-powered smart lighting was selected, including post-fall analysis capability allowing care teams to review footage from 15 seconds before and after an incident, enabling better understanding of what occurred, reducing hospital admissions.

St Michaels Homes Ltd, operator of Dudbrook House, has 147 rooms equipped with Nobi Smart Lights. The system alerts staff within seconds of a fall and illuminates when residents get out of bed, helping to prevent night-time falls and reducing the risk of long-lie incidents.

Sean Watson, Director of St Michaels Homes Ltd, said,
“When Nobi was presented to us, we were sceptical. We couldn’t see how this technology would work.

“We had a resident who was at a high risk of falls and often ended up in A&E. Following a fall, the paramedic came out, saw the post-fall analysis video from Nobi, and confirmed that he’d be okay to stay within our care.

“This was a fantastic example of preventing a resident from siting in A&E, which is distressing for the resident and their family. Even the paramedic said, ‘I can’t believe this sort of technology exists.’ That was a gold moment for Nobi.”

Since installation, Dudbrook House has recorded 41% fewer falls, 70% faster interventions, response times reducing to under four minutes, and zero long-lie falls.

Sean also added, “Having these extra pair of eyes within a care home environment is invaluable. It will help us continue to deliver high-end quality care for all our residents; we would not wish to be without Nobi now.”

Roeland Pilgrims, CEO and Co-Founder of Nobi, said:
“We’re proud to support Dudbrook House in setting a new standard for dementia care. Technology like Nobi empowers care teams to respond faster, prevent falls and provide peace of mind to families. Dudbrook’s results show that even homes with already high standards of care can benefit from intelligent solutions.”

Claire Aldridge, Head of Client Development at Alcove, said:
“At Alcove, we believe technology should enhance the human touch in care. This partnership is a powerful example of how smart solutions can deliver real-world outcomes for residents and families by empowering care teams to provide safer, more responsive, and more dignified support.”

The partnership between Dudbrook House, Alcove, Nobi and the council, highlights the county’s commitment to supporting local care providers and older residents.

Natasha Corness, the council’s Care Technology Lead, added,
“We were looking at fall prevention around high admissions to A&E. Partnering with Alcove and Nobi allowed us to explore how smart technology could help reduce these incidents and improve safety.”
