Balhousie Care Group To Share Award-Winning Care Practices At National Conference

Two staff members from Balhousie Care Group are among the speakers at a conference devoted to caring and dementia which takes place next week.

Yvonne Manson, Dementia Nurse Consultant with Balhousie Care Group and Donna Sinclair, Deputy Manager at Balhousie Stormont Lodge care home in Blairgowrie, will speak about the award-winning care home group’s Namaste Care programme.

Yvonne and Donna join a host of high-calibre speakers at the 10th annual Scottish Caring and Dementia Congress on 18th April 2018 at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. These include academics from the Universities of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, as well as representatives from NHS boards in Scotland and England.

Yvonne and Donna will talk about the improvements staff and family members have witnessed in residents since introducing Namaste Care in 2016. These include improved mood, movement, speech and communication for residents, a greater understanding of advanced dementia, and increased job satisfaction for staff.

Namaste Care is a multi-sensory therapy which promotes connectedness between staff and residents. It can include therapeutic touch, foot massage, face washing and hair brushing and can feature the use of music and fragrance, in a therapeutic environment.

Yvonne Manson said:

“We introduced Namaste Care as part of our dementia strategy to address the needs of those with advanced dementia in Balhousie Care’s 25 care homes and the results have been very positive.  Namaste Care is particularly effective for residents reaching the end of life, who have chosen to die in an environment that is familiar to them than be admitted to hospital.

“One of the benefits of the programme we follow is that it is portable and can be administered in a resident’s own room. Our Namaste champions can support families on how to deliver Namaste Care with the help of the items on our special Namaste trolley. Using the elements of Namaste Care in this one on one way at end of life supports people to live right until their last breath.

“This training adds something different to our palliative care training while supporting our culture of person-centred care and inclusion of all.”
