Abbotsleigh Care Home Resident Reveals Her Secret To A Long And Joyful Life As She Celebrates 108th Birthday
Abbotsleigh Care Home is thrilled to celebrate a remarkable milestone as one of its beloved residents – who has been a part of the Nellsar family since June 2018, continues to inspire those around her with her energy, sense of humour and zest for life.
Born in 1917, Emily last week celebrated her 108th birthday. She grew up in a large family on a farm near Leeds Castle. She trained and worked as a nurse with her sister before marrying and joining her husband on their fruit farm, where they raised two sons. Now, Emily enjoys the companionship of her friends and fellow residents at Nellsar Care Homes, often sharing stories from her past and her witty sense of humour.
A lover of gardening, knitting and baking, Emily brightens the day of everyone around her with her playful spirit and positive outlook. Her advice for life – “stay active and cycle everywhere” – is a humorous reminder of her incredible independence and resilience.
To honour Emily’s 108th birthday, the Care Home hosted a joyful party filled with music and colour. The festivities included a live performance from her favourite local singer, a beautifully decorated birthday cake and eye-catching decorations, including 108 balloons and a special message from the King and Queen.
One of Nellsar’s new volunteers, Keith, presented Emily with a large, handcrafted planter, a heartfelt gift made by the Maintenance team. Avid about gardening, Emily loves spending time outdoors at the Care Home, so this thoughtful gesture was especially meaningful. Brimming with vibrant pink and purple blooms, the planter is placed at the front of the Care Home – offering Emily a daily view of its cheerful colours.
Viv Stead, Nellsar’s Recreation and Well-being Manager, said:
“Emily’s 108th birthday is a milestone that reflects not just her longevity but the warmth, joy and wisdom she shares with us all. It is a privilege for everyone at Nellsar to be part of her special day. Her determination, fun-loving spirit and affection for the simple joys in life make her a beloved figure within our community.”
