Hindhead Care Home Celebrates Culture and Heritage

Residents at a care home in Hindhead, Surrey, have been enjoying new experiences from around the world from the comfort of their own armchairs.

Staff members at RMBI Care Co. Home Shannon Court organised their very own Heritage Day to celebrate the rich diversity and culture of the people that live and work at the care home.

Many staff members dressed in their traditional clothing, including African prints and saris and brought along their favourite recipes to give residents and colleagues a taste of their home countries.

Amongst the tasty dishes were homemade shortbread biscuits and sherry trifle from the UK, Indian Biryani, South Asian dumplings (momo), fish cutlets from Sri Lanka and Zimbabwean beef stew. Some of the carers even took part in Punjabi dancing, filling the care home with music, joy and laughter.

The fun-filled event was inspired by Home Manager Matthew Bryans, who was born in South Africa, where Heritage Day is celebrated each year on 24 September. Matthew also felt it was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the day within the Home, recognising and embracing the many different cultures and backgrounds of those who live and work there.

Staff member Anjalee commented: “I really enjoyed seeing residents getting involved and trying foods from different countries. They also very much appreciated the traditional clothing that staff proudly wore.”

Whilst resident Andrew said: I thought the whole event was brilliant, everything was fantastic. It was great to see the dancing and we all enjoyed it.”
