Mud, Sweat & Cheers: Team Excelcare Goes the Distance for Cancer Research UK

This past weekend, 16 members of the Excelcare Family rolled up their sleeves, laced up their trainers, and took on Pretty Muddy — a fun-filled five-kilometre obstacle course that’s part of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life series.

The challenge was originally sparked by a birthday commitment from Excelcare’s Chief Operating Officer, Sam Manning, who pledged to take part as a personal test of resilience and in support of a cause close to her heart.

Determined not to do it alone, Sam rallied her colleagues across the Excelcare Family, and an additional 15 team members signed up in solidarity — united by a shared ambition to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

While each participant had their own personal reasons for joining the event, for Sam, the cause carried particular significance.

“Five years ago, I was diagnosed with skin cancer. It was a life-altering moment, but thanks to the exceptional care I received, the cancer was successfully removed, and I was given the gift of recovery. To honour that journey, I’ve committed to this charity run — not just for myself, but for my mum and other beloved family members who have also been affected by cancer. My daughter and I will be running side by side, carrying with us the memories of those we’ve loved, supported, and lost.”

Driven by purpose and camaraderie, the team tackled the course with grit, determination, and a lot of laughter. For some, it was their first ever sporting event, and mutual support — whether lifting each other over obstacles or offering a timely word of encouragement — proved just as vital as physical strength.

Their efforts also paid off in fundraising, with the team raising an impressive £1,400 for Cancer Research UK — a meaningful contribution that will help fund life-saving research and support countless individuals and families affected by cancer.
