Former RAF Serviceman Enjoys Special Veterans’ Lunch at Brize Norton

A care home resident who served in the RAF’s search and rescue team has experienced a memorable day out after being invited to a Veterans’ Lunch at RAF Brize Norton.

Billy, who served for three years with search and rescue operations based in Scotland, was selected for the special visit after being chosen as Resident of the Day at his care home. When staff asked what he would most like to do, Billy shared his dream of flying a Spitfire.

Whilst that particular wish wasn’t possible, the care team was determined to arrange something meaningful. They contacted RAF Brize Norton to enquire about a potential visit to view aircraft, and were delighted when Gerry from the base responded with news of an upcoming Veterans’ Lunch.

Through further contact with Kate, the event organiser, Billy received a formal invitation to attend.

The day began with a warm welcome at the Sergeant Mess Squadron, where Billy and his carer enjoyed refreshments before moving to the bar for an informative talk delivered by one of the lance corporals.

A highlight of the visit was a tour of the on-base museum, where Billy spotted an RAF uniform and proudly commented that his own uniform had once looked just like it. He thoroughly enjoyed viewing the equipment and model aircraft on display.

The occasion culminated in a festive three-course lunch at the Sergeant Mess Squadron. Billy was treated to parsnip soup with crusty bread, followed by a traditional Christmas dinner and Christmas pudding with custard, accompanied by a glass of red wine. The meal was enjoyed alongside Group Captain Andy McIntyre, with crackers pulled, jokes shared, and Christmas hats worn throughout.

Before departing, Billy received a thoughtful gift from Kate, and care staff captured photographs and videos throughout the day to share with his family and create a lasting memory book.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Kate said it was “a truly special afternoon filled with reminiscence, smiles, and laughter.”
