Florence House Care Home Secures New Bikes To Support Resident Wellbeing

Residents at Florence House Care Home in Govan are set to enjoy a new way to stay active after receiving a generous donation of bikes and cycling equipment through a grant from Cycling UK.

In March 2025 the home was awarded a generous grant from Cycling UK’s Cycle Access Fund, designed to encourage more people to cycle. The funding has been used to provide residents with a variety of bikes, cycling accessories, and a secure storage facility, all tailored to meet their individual needs.

The process began with visits to Sunny Cycles, where staff and residents explored the grant opportunity and discussed the types of bikes that would best suit the residents. With guidance from Cycling UK representative Jude, Florence House’s wellbeing enabler, Andrew Blake, successfully led the charge and applied for the funding.

Thanks to this funding, the home now has two hybrid cycle bikes, a Theraplay Fun2Go bike as well as a secure shed on the home’s grounds for safe storage of the bikes.

Andrew Blake, wellbeing enabler at Florence House, said: “I’m so pleased we have been able to secure this funding – the residents love getting out and about and the new bikes will provide them with a new and exciting opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, stay active and participate in social and physical activities.”

Residents have already begun exploring the new cycling options, with staff on hand to ensure safety and support. The home aims to integrate these activities into daily routines, promoting both physical health and mental wellbeing.

Emily Ryder, programme manager at Cycling UK, said: “People often have an idea in their head that cycling is for middle aged men trying to beat their personal best on Strava. But cycling is for everyone, whether you’re using it for exercise, getting some fresh air to clear your head, or just popping to the shop.

“The joy and freedom pedalling has given to the residents of Florence House is a powerful story in how communities can stay connected, healthy and happy through cycling.”

Florence House provides care for up to 55 residents across nursing and residential care, including specialist support for those living with dementia, palliative care needs, respite care, and younger adults under 65 requiring care home support.

Nick McLean, care home manager, Florence House, said: “Providing opportunities for residents to stay active and engaged is a key part of our approach to care, that goes beyond care plans and is rooted in personalisation.

“We aim to provide our residents with a varied, stimulating life filled with activities and experiences they have enjoyed before joining us at Florence House.

“Accessing the Cycling UK fund and getting the bikes reinforces the dedication of our staff – particularly Andrew, our wellbeing enabler – who spearheaded the project. He went over and above to secure funding and secure the bikes for the residents across the group to enjoy – to creating an environment where residents can thrive.”
