Colleagues From Leeds Community Scheme Invited To Downing Street As Part Of Networking Event To Highlight And Promote Charity Services In Leeds
Two colleagues from a Leeds community scheme were given “a once in a lifetime” opportunity as they got to visit Downing Street as part of a networking event.
Oli Craven and Michelle Williamson both work at MHA Communities Farsley, where they enable members aged 55 and over to maintain their independence and live more fulfilled lives, through range of initiatives including befriending, breakfast and lunch clubs, assisted shopping, activity and friendship sessions and outings
The two made the journey over to 11 Downing Street, along with other not for profit organisations and groups in the Leeds area to promote and highlight the work they do.
The event was part of the Civil Society Covenant, a new agreement to improve and reset the relationship between civil society and government, aiming to foster a vital foundation for a stronger relationship at all levels and greater understanding of the services charities provide amongst Government Departments.
MHA Communities Farsley were put forward for this event by local councillors Craig Timmins and Peter Carlill
Speaking after the event, Oli, who works as the communities manager said:
“It was a surreal experience and definitely a once in a lifetime experience to visit Downing Street.
“It was great to see MHA Communities Pudsey and Farsley be recognised alongside some exceptional service providers in the Leeds area.
“I saw plenty of familiar faces, and it’s something that I think can help all of us going forward in the bid to raise awareness for the third sector.
“There was a huge sense of pride attached to the visit, and I am very grateful for the opportunity.
“To represent MHA on such a stage was incredible and we received some great support.
“We hope to follow up and capitalise from the event and work as one to promote the good work we all do, but at the same time highlight the support we need to continue to do the great work we all do.”
Michelle, who works as a community coordinator added:
“It was an honour to be asked to visit Downing Street.
“Walking into number 11, I felt very proud and privileged and it is something I will never forget.
“Touching base with other organisations and groups was very enjoyable and I had some great conversations.
“We were able to get some ideas from one another, and I look forward to working collaboratively with some of the organisations.”
