Back Of The Net! York Care Home Makes York City Superfan’s Wish Come True
A York care home resident has scored big by watching their favourite football team play.
The team at Care UK’s Chocolate Works, on Bishopthorpe Road, gave York City superfan and resident Eileen Horsley the full fan experience.
Eileen is a lifelong fan of the team, having been born in York and watching many games in her younger years. So, when the team surprised her with York City vs Aldershot Town tickets, she was over the moon.
Eileen said: “I never thought at 92 I’d ever get the chance to do this.”
“I’ve followed this team for so many years, seen the good bits and the bad bits, so to get to see them in person again after so long was amazing. It was such a great day, I can’t believe we got to see Joel Grey score a hat trick!”
To make the visit all the more joyous, York City took the win, scoring 5-1.
As well as watching the game, lifelong fan Eileen shared her memories from years of supporting the team, including favourite players through the decades.
Eileen hung her goal on the home’s Wishing Tree, a special Care UK initiative that enables residents to revisit old hobbies and passions or try something new. Whether it’s a fish and chip supper, a skydive or watching a football match, no wish is too big or small for the team to try to grant.
Judy Wray, Home Manager at Chocolate Works, said:
“Eileen is a huge York City fan, so we made it our mission to give her the opportunity to watch the team play live.
“Eileen loves watching York City matches whenever they’re shown on television, and lights up whenever she talks about the team.
“Our Wishing Tree initiative is a wonderful way for residents to share their passions and ambitions, and it’s hugely rewarding to be able to make these dreams a reality. Eileen had a fantastic time and hasn’t stopped talking about the game since.
“I want to say a massive thank you to York City FC and the team here at Chocolate Works who helped make Eileen’s wish come true!”
