Countdown To Restraint Reduction Conference

In a few days’ time, experts from across the Health, Social Care, Education and Policing Sectors will be gathering at the 2015 Restraint Reduction Network European Conference to share best practice on reducing the use of restrictive and coercive practices.

Delegates at the conference in Birmingham, on the 12th and 13th November, will be hearing from experts from around the world who will be sharing their insight into how the use of restraint can be minimised and discuss how the misuse and abuse of restraint can be stopped.  The conference will be headlined by BBC Social Affairs Correspondent, Alison Holt, who will be joined by keynote speakers including Metropolitan Police Commander, Christine Jones, leading American restraint expert, Kevin Huckshorn and NHS England Head of Mental Health and Learning Disabilities, Hazel Watson.

Speakers have been giving a preview of what they will be saying on the conference website. Today, Independent Consultant Nurse and Expert Witness, Lynne Phair discusses how attitudes to care have changed over time and what lessons need to be learnt to ensure that historic cases of abuse of vulnerable adults never happen again.

Restraint Reduction Network™ Chair Professor Joy Duxbury said:

“Despite progress following a number of high-profile cases across a various sectors, there is still a great deal of improvement needed when it comes to reducing the use of restraint.

The Restraint Reduction Network™ is committed to promoting best practice and at this year’s conference we will be outlining some ground-breaking new methods for advancing the quality of care for vulnerable people.”

The conference will take place over 12th and 13th November at Conference Aston in Birmingham.
