The Stars Come Out At Belong Care Awards

Belong staff celebrated recently at their annual Star Awards, which was held this year at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa and was attended by over 200 care professionals from across the group. Staff were nominated by village residents and their relatives, co-workers and members of the wider community. Star Awards were presented by Sharon Blackburn, Policy and Communications Director for the National Care Forum, who congratulated Belong staff on their commitment to providing quality care for older people.

Marlene Burkin, Lead Senior Support Worker at Belong Macclesfield, won the Care Professional of the Year award. Impressed by her compassion, professional dedication and calm approach, one judge said:

“We were really impressed by the calm approach she manages to maintain at all times.”

Outstanding Achievement of the Year was awarded to Barbara Tait, Fitness Instructor at Belong Macclesfield. Chosen particularly for the increased mobility that she has helped customers at Belong Macclesfield to achieve, judges said:

“Barbara is an enthusiastic, driving character. Her research and perseverance have been a great benefit to the people using her services.”

Carl Whittaker, Caretaker at Belong Crewe, won in the category of Support Services of the Year. Awarded for his for his proactive approach to working in the village and ability to combine the needs of residents with the responsibilities of his role, judges noted:

“Carl clearly recognises the importance of teamwork, and that it’s the interaction with residents and supporting their needs that are critical to the job.”

Belong Team of the Year award was given jointly to Coronation and Britannia Households at Belong Crewe, because the two teams show such a willingness to share skills and work flexibly to offer the best level of care to the people living in their households. Judges said that the enthusiastic and committed teams were chosen because: “Their passion shone through.”

A total of 33 staff from the Belong villages also received certificates for outstanding achievement in a range of professional development qualifications, including diplomas in Health and Social Care, and Leadership and Management in a Care Setting.

Phil Orton, Head of People Management and Development for Belong, said of the awards:

“We have a fantastic team of staff at Belong, and it is their dedication that enables us to provide the highest level of care to our customers. The Star Awards are our way of recognising their hard work and showing how much we value their efforts to expand their skills and go the extra mile for everybody within Belong villages.”
