Dementia Experts To Hold Free Public Open Day In Cardiff
Ageing and dementia experts in Wales are holding a free public open day in Cardiff to help people understand more about dementia.
The event is organised by the Alzheimer’s Research UK Cardiff Network Centre based at Cardiff University and the Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research based at Swansea University. It will take place on Friday 13 November at The Village Urban Resort Cardiff and feature an engaging mix of talks, information stands and displays about the condition, as well as an art exhibition and a performance by the Young Persons with Dementia Choir.
Dementia affects 850,000 people in the UK, including over 40,000 people in Wales. The condition, most commonly caused by Alzheimer’s disease, has symptoms including memory loss, confusion, communication and language difficulties, and personality changes. The biggest risk factor for dementia is age, and with an ageing population, the condition is expected to have an even bigger impact on individuals and families in the coming years.
Prof Lesley Jones, from Cardiff University, who leads the Alzheimer’s Research UK Cardiff Network Centre, said:
“We hope this informal and friendly event will be a good opportunity for people to put their questions to a panel of dementia experts and talk to organisations about different aspects of dementia from care to the latest progress in research. We will hear talks about communication in dementia, how to create an environment that is supportive for people with the condition, as well as looking at some of the latest research into brain function. We are particularly pleased to be showcasing interactive and memory art by the artist Melanie Wotton and hearing a performance from a choir made up of people with young-onset dementia. We would invite anyone who wants to know more about dementia to book a place and come along.”

“As a charity dedicated to helping people understand dementia and funding cutting-edge dementia research, we want to give people the opportunity to find out more. There is some great work taking place in Wales to help those affected by dementia, as well as pioneering research to improve diagnosis and treatments. This event will give the public a chance to find out more, ask questions and hear the latest progress being made in research.
“Dementia is one of the greatest health challenges of our generation. It’s only through increased awareness and understanding of the condition and greater funding for research that we can tackle it head on and make a real difference to those affected and their families.”
The event will take place on Friday 13 November 2015 at The Village Urban Resort Cardiff, Coryton from 10am-4pm. Registration will begin at 9am with refreshments and there will be lunch provided.
