Council Approves Additional Funding For “Super” Care Scheme For Millbrook

MilbrookMembers of the Cabinet, Southampton City Council, have approved additional funds for the design and planning of a housing with care scheme at Woodside Lodge and Wimpson Lane in Millbrook.

The Cabinet approved an additional £850,000 for the housing with care scheme at Woodside Lodge and 536-550 Wimpson Lane, so that it may commission a variety of site surveys, specialist advice and consultancy services to support a planning application. The scheme would initiate the regeneration of the Millbrook and Maybush area and provide much-needed affordable housing for residents.

Under the current draft plans, the scheme at Woodside Lodge includes over 80 homes within a Housing With Care facility, two thirds being 1-bedroom apartments and one third 2-bedroom apartments.  The scheme will also have a communal lounge, guest suite, plus kitchen and dining facility which can be used by others within the wider locality.

The proposed scheme at Wimpson Lane will provide 15 general needs homes for over-50’s — 9 x 1-bed and 6 x 2-bed apartments.

The schemes are expected to be completed in Spring 2019.

First Wessex Housing Group will act as the council’s development agent for the Woodside and Wimpson Lane sites.

Cllr Simon Letts, Leader of Southampton City Council, said:

“As a council we are committed to providing accommodation for our elderly residents which will allow them to live independently but in the knowledge that support is available if  needed. This is what residents I have spoken to tell me they want as opposed to the alternative of a care home.

“This is the second scheme that we will build and I as Leader of the Council am committed to building others the next one being on the east of the city.”
