Competitive Care Home Residents Play Indoor Badminton

BADMINTON brought out the competitive side of elderly care home residents after being inspired by Sport Relief.

The residents and staff at Pelton Grange Care Home, in Chester-le-Street, donned their sports gear and took to the living room court.

Using the sofas as nets, oversized rackets and shuttlecocks, they paired up for a doubles competition.

The winners were resident Enid Stearman and home manager Les Burnett.

Enid said: “What a wonderful time we had. I’ve never played badminton before. It was harder than it looks but lots of fun.”

Residents also took part in a relay around the home and a Maltesers race, with straws used to blow the chocolates around a tabletop race track.

Les Burnett, home manager at Pelton Grange Care Home, on Front Street, Pelton, said: “The residents watch Sport Relief on the TV each year and got inspired to try something new.

“We brought in oversized equipment for a few games of badminton and it all got quite competitive. The residents thoroughly enjoyed it, with lots of laughs all round.”
