Care Assistant Goes Extra Mile for Ashworth Grange Residents
A Senior Care Assistant at Ashworth Grange care home in Dewsbury has won a notable award for her remarkable involvement in resident activities. Sue Ackroyd, who has worked at the home for over five years, won the Ideal Carehomes Certificate in Excellence for Activities, after being nominated by Regional Activities Executive, Yvonne Mulholland.
Sue comes in to see the residents on her days off to lead various exercise and music classes. She is also a keen crafter and has taught herself to make greetings cards and origami – skills which she has then passed to the residents of Ashworth Grange. Sue also hosts a regular coffee afternoon in the home’s café where residents and guests can meet over a hot drink and a piece of cake.
Sue has worked in care for nearly ten years, and she really enjoys the interaction and friendships she builds with the residents. She said, “I love sitting down with the residents and teaching them something new. We always have lots of fun, especially at the monthly pop-up restaurants which are great for residents who struggle to get out and about so much.”
Ashworth Grange, which is operated by Ideal Carehomes, ensures that there is a wide range of activities on offer so that there is something to suit everyone. The staff host monthly Social Committee Meetings to ensure that residents get the opportunity to have their say on what goes on in the home. Jean Taylor, who has lived at Ashworth Grange for four years, is really impressed with the range of activities and trips which are on offer at her home and she enjoys taking part is Sue’s sessions. She said, “Sue is wonderful, she will do anything for anyone and nothing is too much trouble. I like her and I am sure everyone else does too!”.
Ashworth Grange provides residential and dementia care for 64 residents and is committed to offering them aspirational lifestyle choices. Breaking down the pre-conceived perceptions of care home life, the residents at Ashworth Grange enjoy an active social environment with events, trips and daily activities on offer.
