Belong Village’s Resident May Celebrates 105th Birthday

May Fazackerly, resident at specialist care village Belong Wigan, has celebrated her 105th birthday in style with a special Scottish-themed party organised by the village staff, complete with a visit the Mayor and Mayoress of Wigan and newly elected Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham.

Belong Wigan staff members, who were all dressed in kilts in celebration of May’s Edinburgh roots, organised a range of surprises to mark May’s special day; alongside a ‘telegram’ from The Queen, May received cards from her snooker hero Stephen Hendry, as well as messages and hand made cards from members of the local community, including St Benedict’s Primary School pupils who have recently taken part in Dementia Friends sessions led by Belong, to help them to support people living with dementia.

If visits from mayors weren’t quite enough, May was also joined by family and friends, including 12-year-old Daisy May Calderbank, who shares May’s birthday and name and visits the village regularly. May also enjoyed spending her birthday with fellow Belong Wigan resident, Peggy Carty, who turned 90 on the same day.

The party was made complete by a personalised snooker table birthday cake, in honour of May’s love of the sport.

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “It was a privilege to be able to share May’s special birthday celebration and share the wonderful community spirit here. I’m so pleased that May has had a lovely day – it was great to be part of it.”

Belong Wigan General Manager, Gill Menguy, commented: “We all had a wonderful day at our Scottish themed party and it was an honour to help May celebrate her milestone 105th birthday. Our Experience Coordinator, Marie Calderbank, pulled out all of the stops to ensure that May had a wonderful day full of surprise celebrity appearances, cards and gifts. From everyone at Belong, I would like to wish May a very happy birthday and we hope that she’ll enjoy many more memorable occasions with us in the future.”

Marie Calderbank, added: “We had a lovely day celebrating May’s birthday with our special guests! May is a much-loved member of the Belong Wigan community, having lived in an independent apartment for five years, until she moved into our supported Beech household last year. We are so glad that we were able to help her to celebrate this momentous occasion.”
