An Eye Opening Experience For Staff At Ashmere Derbyshire

VDTAshmere Derbyshire offered their staff the opportunity to participate on the Virtual Dementia Tour, as part of their ongoing professional development.

The Virtual Dementia Tour is the only scientifically and medically proven method of giving a person with a healthy brain an experience of what dementia might be like.

Participants are given headsets, shoe insoles and special glasses which simulate the sensations that people with dementia experience every day.

Managing Director, David Poxton said “I think experiences like that are invaluable to give a unique insight to people living with Dementia. This tool is extremely useful and Ashmere Derbyshire is making this training mandatory for all staff”.

It has now been published that dementia kills more people than Heart Disease or Cancer and therefore is the largest cause of death in the UK.  Indeed statistics show that one in three people that were born in the UK in 2015 are expected to die from dementia.  With these statistics, it is vital that we continually improve the quality of training and start to focus on what dementia is like for the person.
